  • Seoul Lantern Festival Lights Up the Night
    Seoul Lantern Festival, Seoul’s main winter festival, will brighten up the night from December 15, 2023 to January 21, 2024. This year marks the 15th year of the festival, and will be expanding for the first time to include Gwanghwamun Plaza and Seoul Plaza, making it the largest it has ever been! This year’s theme is “White Night in Seoul” and will feature LED lanterns made of hanji (traditional Korean paper), air balloons, kinetic art, and more fun lighting displays. As 2024 is the Year of the Dragon, special displays will focus on dragons, including a large blue dragon at Gwanghwamun Plaza, and the “White Dragon” display at Cheonggyecheon Stream. Gwanghwamun Plaza Market is a Christmas market for local small businesses. Vendors will have everything to enjoy a joyful holiday season, from Christmas products to craft items, and winter treats. Other programs include Christmas and New Year’s photo zones and participatory events. This year’s market will also include food trucks and dining booth area during the festival period.   • One Fine Day in October, Celebrate Visit Korea Year 2023-2024
    Korea Tourism Organization & Visit Korea Year will host the One Fine Day in October event to celebrate Visit Korea Year 2023-2024 The event will showcase Korea’s charms as a tourist destination through many performances, including K-pop artist CHA EUNWOO from Astro, and boy band CIX, as well as traditional performances by Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation’s performing arts group. CHA EUNWOO, the Visit Korea Year 2023-2024 ambassador, will host a talk concert and discuss a range of themes from travel to food. One Fine Day in October will take place on Saturday, October 14 at Universal Art Center in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul.   • The 2023 Korean Literature Review Contest is Open to Foreign Readers
    Literature Translation Institute of Korea (the “Institute”) holds the 2023 Korean Literature Review Contest from July 10 (Mon) to September 30 (Sat).Anyone can apply for this contest after reading one of the books selected by the Institute and expressing their impressions in various creative formats, including text, picture, and video. Any foreign readers over the age of 14 are eligible for the contest. This year, applicable languages are five: English, Chinese, Indonesian, Arabic, and Spanish.   • KTO’s Efforts to Assist Jamboree Attendees
    The Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) is putting in all their effort to assist Jamboree attendees affected by the typhoon. The 2023 Saemangeum World Scout Jamboree had to be canceled early due to an incoming typhoon, leaving scouts to scatter throughout the country as they wait for their flights home. Despite this emergency situation, KTO is doing all they can to provide Jamboree attendees with positive memories of their time in Korea. Foremost, KTO has dedicated staff fluent in languages spoken by Jamboree attendees to assist with interpretation, creating a one-stop support service for all travel-related inquiries, from overcoming travel difficulties to signing up for tourism programs. With the support of the Ministry of Culture, Sports & Tourism, they are also providing Korean culture and history experience programs for attendees from developing countries. KTO’s comprehensive travel platform, VISITKOREA also has a special travel guide page aimed at Jamboree attendees. The page lists major attractions in the Seoul metropolitan area like Cheong Wa Dae, as well as attractions popular among Korean youth, such as K-pop music video filming locations. In addition, an information center for Jamboree attendees has opened at HiKR Ground, KTO’s Korean Tourism Promotion Hall in Seoul. The center provides information related to Korean tourism as well as docent tours and k-pop dance classes. Lastly, the K-pop concert scheduled for the end of the Jamboree has been rescheduled to take place at 7PM on August 11 (Fri.) at Seoul World Cup Stadium in Mapo-gu, Seoul.
